Stop the Bleed

American College of Surgeons

1 APPLY PRESSURE WITH HANDS

Apply as much pressure as possible directly on the bleeding wound with both hands. This helps slow down the blood flow and buys time for further actions.

2 APPLY DRESSING AND PRESS
Illustration of applying dressing and pressing

If possible, pack the wound with clean cloth or medical dressing, then continue to apply firm pressure with both hands. The dressing helps absorb blood and promotes clotting.

3 APPLY TOURNIQUET

If bleeding cannot be controlled with direct pressure, apply a tourniquet 2-3 inches above the wound. DO NOT place the tourniquet over a joint.

Wrap the tourniquet

WRAP

Wrap the tourniquet tightly around the limb.

Wind the windlass

WIND

Twist the windlass until the bleeding stops.

Secure the windlass

SECURE

Secure the windlass in place so it does not loosen.

Note the time

TIME

Note the time the tourniquet was applied.
